DESCRIPTION:
Tenth grade writing centers on the ELA standards. Even though the students will not have to take the exam until January of 2011 it is important to prepare now. Based on current NYS Department of Education rules, this year’s tenth grade class must score at least 55% on this difficult exam to graduate from high school. All portions of the standards are addressed in class, but the Information and Understanding and Literary Analysis sections are stressed. We focus on strategies that have worked well for a wide range of students and learning styles and attempt to give the students tools to work with. If you have any particular questions about the exam or the sections, please contact me.
GOALS:
1. To become a more effective communicator through writing
2. To be knowledgeable and comfortable with the ELA Regents Exam, especially the second and fourth sections
REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to be aware of their own learning styles, advocate appropriately for needed assistance, and participate in a manner that allows for their learning and the learning of others.
RESOURCES:
Be sure to check my website daily: http://hopkinsnhs.wordpress.com.
Also, please be sure to read the attached plagiarism policy.
EVALUATION:
The students will be assessed on three major criteria each marking period. The first is their homework/classwork grade – whether each day’s reading and/or writing assignment has been completed. The second is exam/paper/project grades. The final component is class participation- how engaged the student is in class and how prepared they are.
Generally, homework/classwork count 50%, exams/papers/projects count 40% and participation is 10% of the marking period grade.
